Before the outbreak of Covid, lots of people have never heard about the city named Wuhan in China, mostly heard are Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc. Even now if you mentioned Hubei, they may not know that Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei province. So how much do you know about Wuhan? If you have business trip there, do you know how to get there from other cities? Let’s check it out.


Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei Province, located in CENTRAL China with population of over 11 million. It lies in the eastern Jianghan Plain, at the confluence of the Yangtze river and its largest tributary, the Han River and is known as “Nine Provinces’ Thoroughfare”, which means it’s really convenient to travel from Wuhan to all provinces in China with its complete facilities of transportation.


【How to get from Guangzhou to Wuhan?】

The distance between Guangzhou and Wuhan is about 1,069 kilometers (664 miles), and the popular means of transportation are by plane and by train (including by bullet train).


1) Air Transport

Every day, there are about 15 pairs of direct flights between Wuhan Tianhe Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, and fight time is about 1 hour 50 minutes. Flight tickets prices often have reduction, and range from around 200 yuan to a little more over 800 yuan (excluding 130-yuan fuel surcharge and 50-yuan airport construction fee).

Kind reminder: If your departure day is fixed, booking a flight ticket early will usually save money.


2) Train Transport: the Economical Choice

Currently, every day there are about 74 pairs of trains running between Wuhan and Guangzhou, including bullet trains (G trains, D trains) and common trains (T trains, Z trains and K trains).

Bullet train is a good choice for traveling between Wuhan and Guangzhou. G train (more than 40 pairs of G trains, run daily) has the fastest speed, and the time for a journey is about 4 hours. Next is the D train (only 2 D trains run between Guangzhou and Wuhan: D2101 and D2103, daily), with the time for a journey of 6 hours. The termini for G train or a D train are Wuhan Station and Guangzhou South Station.

Of course, the ticket price for a bullet train is much more expensive than those for common trains. Both G trains and D trains have two kinds of ticket: first-class seat and second-class seat.

G train: 740 yuan for a first-class seat and 465 yuan for a second-class seat

D train: 530 yuan for a first-class seat and 330 yuan for a second-class seat


Note: Wuhan has three railway stations: Wuhan Station (the most popular one), Wuchang Station and Hankou Station, and Guangzhou also has three railway stations: Guangzhou Railway Station, Guangzhou South Railway Station and Guangzhou East Railway Station.


【How to get from Shanghai to Wuhan】


Shanghai is about 825km (515mi) east from Wuhan. Available ways of transport between these two cities are plane, high speed train, normal speed train and long-distance bus. The flying usually lasts 2 hours, and the ticket fare of economy class is around CNY700. The high speed train will take 4 to 5.5 hours, and its cheapest ticket only costs CNY315. Counting in the time consumed to/from the airport, high speed train can be your best choice.


1) Air Transport

Passengers can also travel by air which only takes about 2 hours, but it will usually cost more. Besides, the airports are a little far from the downtown area, and it takes time for the transfer, which makes the total air travel time almost the same as the high speed rail travel time.

Every day, there are about 12 pairs of direct flights between Wuhan Tianhe Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao/Pudong Airport, and fight time is about 1 hour 55 minutes.

It’s worth mentioning that only one or two planes are arranged in the afternoon, so well arrange your travel plan if you book the flight.


2) Train Transport: the Economical Choice

Nearly 40 pairs of trains are operated between Shanghai and Wuhan. Among them, over 30 pairs are bullet trains with duration of 4 – 6.5 hours. The other pairs are normal types, including overnight sleeper trains; their duration is 9.5 – 18.5 hours.


During 6:00 to 18:00, nearly 20 high speed trains take tourists from Shanghai to Wuhan. Two departure railway stations are Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station. And tourists will get off at Hankou Railway Station or Wuhan Railway Station.

Wuhan has metro with currently 9 lines, 228 stations, and 339KM (211 mi) of route length metro network. It helps to commute across the Yangtze River and Han River, and connect three towns of Wuhan.
